Mustafa Kemal Ataturk

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (The founder of the Turkish Republic and its first President)Ataturk was born in Salonika in 1881. He passed away in Istanbul on 10 November 1938.Atatürk was a military genius, a charismatic leader, also a comprehensive reformer in his life. It was important at the time for the Republic of Turkey to be modernized in order to progress towards the level of contemporary civilizations and to be an active member of the culturally developed communities. Mustafa Kemal modernized the life of his country. In 1981 on the centenary of his birth, Atatürk was commemorated both in Turkey and abroad as a peerless leader, commander, revolutionary, politician and statesman. UNESCO declared 1981 as "The Year of Atatürk". “Peace at home, Peace in the World”"Religion is an issue of conscience. Everyone is free to conform to the commands of their conscience. Information About Carassauga
Carassauga is Ontario’s largest multi-cultural festival. Held over three days the last weekend in May, throughout the City of Mississauga, visitors have the opportunity to “travel the world” without leaving the City.
In 2007, over 215,000 guests visited twenty-three different pavilions located in various cultural and recreation centres and arenas in the City of Mississauga. Last year Carassauga introduced for the first time the International Pavilion, a collection of countries under one roof. Each pavilion depicted the culture of their country of origin through food, music, art, dance, fashion shows, historical displays, games and vendors.
Carassauga is an incorporated non-profit volunteer community organization, celebrating its 23rd anniversary in 2008. Last year over 3,000 volunteers gave of their time to ensure its success.
Carassauga aims to promote understanding, respect and co-operation among all Canadians of different heritage, where people can forget politics and celebrate culture.
Carassauga operated for the first time in 1986 with 10 pavilions, initially operating only on Saturday and Sunday. It was developed in response to a challenge put out by our Mayor, Hazel McCallion, to all ethnocultural groups invited by her to attend a meeting in the old City Hall in the fall of 1985.
The festival has always operated during the month of May for the past 17 consecutive years, and has stuck to the weekend following the May 24th designate weekend since the early 90's.
Over the years it has attracted 27 different "countries" to be entered, each of which is sponsored by a local non-profit organizations. A "Country" is generously defined as being any of:
countries recognized formally by the United Nations,
countries which have a historic tradition of independence of self-rule (eg. England or Scotland or Croatia),
Geographic regions sharing a common cultural heritage (eg. Caribbean or Latin America),
The organization became incorporated as a non-profit organization with the Ontario Government in 1992, and currently has the following incorporated objectives: "To primarily organize, manage, finance, and promote "Carassauga", an annual Mississauga-wide festival event, in co-operation with City-based ethnocultural organizations, with the following objectives:
To provide an opportunity for Mississauga citizen groups from different countries of origin to promote public awareness, appreciation, and enjoyment of their cultures and cultural expressions,
To promote principles of good citizenship, thereby encouraging tolerance, mutual cooperation, and respect between and amongst Mississauga citizens,
To encourage ethno-specific groups to cooperate together and to participate in mainstream cultural, civic, and social activities.
It has always enjoyed a close affiliated working relationship with the City via Recreation and Parks Division. It initially relied on City Council Corporate Grants to subsidize its operation, but evolved to become independent of reliance on these grants in 1995. (The Mayor is especially proud of that fact).
